september favorites: surrealist books, absurd outfits, and modern art

today marks the end of my first winter/spring september. it's an odd feeling, having always associated september with the entrance of autumn. now, the air gets thicker and stickier and i need to start shaving my legs again. this year, i'll turn 27 in the south american sun.

this september did certainly feel like an ode to the end of winter and the welcoming of spring. i tried to be outside as much as possible, when weather and obligations permitted (it rained often and i began my third semester of grad school).

books read: four
movies watched: three
restaurants/cafes visited: 15
trains taken: one (from Buenos Aires to La Plata)
shows watched: six (mostly mini series)
words written: a lot (accidentally disconnected my grammarly account so unsure on numbers)

my favorite book of the month was:

earthlings by sayaka murata

earthlings boo
japanese edition of earthlings

painful but innovative exploration of abuse and trauma. graphic, gory, and uncomfortable. 4.25/5

my favorite youtube video(s) of the month was:

my favorite show of the month:

the pitt

hyper realistic medical drama without the interpersonal drama and extramarital affairs. made me squeeze my eyes shut and wipe my palms of sweat.

my favorite movie of the month:

weapons

sinners remains my 2025 horror movie of the year, but weapons was also so damn good. almost campy but still takes itself seriously and julia garner steals the show as always.

my favorite place of the month:

i am lucky enough to have two favorite places I visited in september. the first being el museo de arte moderno de buenos aires.

el museo de arte moderno de buenos aires
exterior view of the museum

this is maybe my new favorite museum. incredibly well curated, enough english translations for me to fully absorb artists' intentions, and overall a beautiful place to pass several hours. my favorite exhibition was Dalila Puzzovio: Autorretrato. i would highly recommend checking out Puzzovio's work.

my second favorite place this month was the catedral de la plata

catedral de la plata
view of the cathedral from several hundred feet in the air

i love places of worship. having grown up catholic and left the church as a teenager, there is a specific brand of nostalgia i feel in churches that i can't feel elsewhere. this cathedral is an insane architectural feat and gothic delight. we had a great time exploring the sub-church museum and taking the elevator all the way to the top with a bunch of old drunks.

my favorite food of the month:

salad from dopo cafe

this salad from dopo cafe included burrata and pesto, leaving little room for other flavors. it was perfect.

goals for october include celebrating myself, reading ten books, actually studying spanish and trying to improve, cooking two new recipes, trying four new restaurants.
